GPS Software for Point Translation & Downloading |
If you use a Garmin GPS receiver, then you can probably download/upload point data from your GPS receiver. There are several packages available free that allow for simple point transformations between OS Easting, Northing figures and standard lat/long measurements used globally. One must be careful which standard is selected on both the GPS receiver and any translation programs for lat/long measurements, as there are slightly different systems.
To convert OS grid references into Lat/Long coordinates suitable for my GPS I use a program provided by Specialist Systems Ltd, which is free of charge called NGR.EXE. This program takes input as OS grid coordinates and outputs them as Lat Long.
To upload and download information between your PC and the device, there is a free program I found called G7toWin that seems to be available from various sources. This program will let you save various routes that you've planned on your PC.
I currently have a GPS12 receiver, with a data cable, I did not purchase the Garmin software, as the combination of the two above programs work quite well for me. Also I have a handlebar mount, but with the type of riding I do, it tends to turn itself off occasionally.
